David Amps – Managing Director

As managing director, David sets the strategic direction of the business and oversees every aspect of Routeco. His journey into engineering began in childhood, fascinated by how electric toys worked. Rejecting A-levels and university in favour of something more practical, he started an Perkins Engineer apprenticeship at age 16 boldly telling his interviewers he wanted to be a director one day.

Routeco Journey:

Joined in June 1998 as an External Technical Support Engineer. Progressed through Product Engineer, Product Manager, Technical Manager, National Sales Manager, Sales Director, and Chief Operating Officer, before stepping into the MD role.

Dave joined Routeco in June 1998 as an external technical support engineer, when the business turned over around £30 million a year with 100 people. He saw the chance to grow with the company rather than stay a cog in the wheel.

To support his progression at Routeco, Dave had excellent mentors who didn’t necessarily give him the answers he needed, but were there to listen and provide a sounding board to talk through ideas and obstacles. He’s passionate about people growing with the business and taking on feedback from others – especially the diversity of points of view from people who are different to him.

His advice to 18 year-old-self would be to go ahead and do; work hard and really care.
